Plaza Azteca to open Mexican restaurant in Cumberland County

by admin

A national Mexican restaurant chain is bringing one of its units to Cumberland County.

Plaza Azteca is opening at the former TGI Friday’s at 5500 Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township. Renovations are underway at the restaurant, which sits near Lowe’s Home Improvement.

An opening date has not been announced. The Virginia-based company could not be reached by PennLive for comment.

Plaza Azteca operates about 40 casual, sit-down restaurants in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Connecticut, West Virginia, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. The closest ones are in Lancaster and York and Myerstown, Lebanon County.

Plaza Azteca advertises “Your Shortcut to Mexico,” according to its website. Its lengthy menu of “authentic Mexican food” includes tacos, empanadas, burritos and fresh-made guacamole as well as margaritas. The website also lists vegetarian and vegan dishes including tacos.

TGI Friday’s closed earlier this year after operating at the site since 2007.
