Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Curry On offers Indian-American fusion in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, MI — For Curry On owner Rutul Patel, creating a dish is as much about recreating an Indian classic as it is including an American twist.

Although the menu at Curry On, 2711 Plymouth Rd., includes staples like biryani and samosas, it also features traditional Indian foods served with an American twist, such masala fries, a curry burrito and poutine with Indian gravy.

“The food is traditional, but also American,” said Patel. “…Most things are just like a slight, a small alteration to make it like an American twist.”

The curry burrito — named The Big Curry — features the customer’s choice of curry and a crushed samosa or aloo tiki, all wrapped in a flour tortilla. The dish was created by one of Patel’s former employees, he said.

The Holy Poutine!, which also started as a kitchen snack, features fries smothered in pepperjack cheese, onion, lime juice and a choice between marinated chicken or paneer.

Curry On also carries a variety of Kati rolls, which are half-price between 1 and 4 p.m. every day during Curry On’s “Curryosity Hour.”

Curry On’s small menu, which tops out at around 20 items, makes Indian food more accessible to those unfamiliar with the cuisine, Patel said.

Newcomers to Indian food should try kati rolls or the butter chicken, Patel said, while those who are more adapted to spice may enjoy biryani.

Creating fusion foods is possible in America because customers are more open to trying non-traditional foods, Patel said.

“There’s so many people who want a new experience and are willing to try anything,” Patel said. “You don’t see that a lot.”

Curry On, 2711 Plymouth Rd, is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The restaurant is carry-out only. Find it online, on social media or by phone at 734-418-3175.
