Val’s steakhouse in Daly City is set to close by end of year

Val’s, a classic steakhouse at 2468 Junipero Serra Blvd. in Daly City, is set to close by the end of the year, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently of one another.)

A fixture in the Daly City community, the restaurant was known for slabs of juicy prime rib, tender beef medallions and French dip sandwiches.

“At lunch time our most popular is the French dip sandwich — best in Northern California,” co-owner Jeff Taylor told the Mercury News in 2011. “That’s what my customers tell me — I didn’t make it up.”

The large green sign out front with red neon lights that read, “Val’s, charcoal broiled steaks, lunch, dinners, cocktails,” has shined brightly on Junipero Serra Boulevard since 1950 when it first opened.

Val’s in Daly City is set to close by the end of the year.

In 1975, after completing the hotel and restaurant program at City College in San Francisco, the Taylor brothers, Greg and Jeff, bought the storied steakhouse from its original owner. They have been operating it ever since.

According to Facebook user Ab Larry, the Daly City hotspot is set to close on Dec. 15. The owners have been trying to sell the place since the start of the pandemic. SFGATE was unable to reach the Taylor brothers to confirm these statements, though the San Francisco Chronicle reported that they do not have a set closing date, yet.

“I really can’t believe this place is closing,” Larry wrote in his Facebook post. “When I was a kid I used to say to my dad (who was named Val) ‘There’s your restaurant!’ Had some really great times here over the years. It breaks my heart.”

Other users echoed the sentiment.

“Hearing about this one was like hearing about the passing of an old friend,” wrote another person.

For now, customers can still order steaks and racks of lamb as the Taylor brothers decide on an official closing date.
