Superior Grill Birmingham, a Tex-Mex mainstay for nearly three decades that was known for its flashy neon lighting on U.S. 280 and at one time was voted the best Mexican restaurant in Birmingham, has closed.

“Our first words must be thank you,” the owners posted on Facebook on Sunday, announcing that the restaurant was officially closed. “Thank you Birmingham for 27 years of fun, friendships and family.”

Superior Restaurants still operates several Louisiana locations in Shreveport, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, with one coming soon in Lafayette, the announcement said.

Readers of The Birmingham News voted Superior Grill as the best Mexican restaurant in Birmingham in 2003 and it was also rated high as a favorite for its margaritas. Superior Grill was a popular music venue, featuring bands playing on a stage inside the restaurant.
