Good news for food lovers in Newton Abbot as a new restaurant and bar is set to open in November.
Meddy Grill Meze and Cocktail Bar will be located where the former Burger King used to be which has been vacant for nearly a year.
The owner may have only moved to Devon two months ago but he has big plans for his new venture.
Speaking to the owner Doğan Fırat, he told us what people can expect when they open.
He said: “I want to make people feel like they can have high-class food at a reasonable price. I want people to feel that good food doesn’t always cost a lot.”
The new restaurant will be combining classic Turkish delicacies from old family recipes and will be giving it a modern and contemporary twist.
Doğan said that the idea for the new restaurant came from the need to create a family-style local restaurant that can provide top quality food and service.
He informed us that where possible, the products used will be locally sourced and the food served will be made fresh every day from their chef Imam.
Meddy Grill Meze and Cocktail Bar is set to provide a relaxed, fun and friendly environment for their customers.
Doğan expressed he believes this area needs something different and believes Turkish food is becoming more popular with people because it’s healthier as their food is cooked on the grill and not in oil
He said: “From what I’ve heard there is a lot of interest at the moment from people about our restaurant. Fingers crossed when we open customers enjoy it!”
This isn’t the first restaurant that Doğan has owned either as after working as a chef since the age of 15 in Turkey and training in hotels for a decade, he’s gone on to own multiple restaurants in the UK with the most recent being in London.
However, he wanted to swap the busy city life for something quieter and decided to move to Devon to bring some Turkish cuisine to Newton Abbot.
Doğan said: “It’s definitely more peaceful than London, compared to the city it’s quieter and nicer. The people around here are so helpful and friendly.”
Meddy Grill Meze and Cocktail Bar is aiming to open on November 15 but there have been some delays which Doğan said may mean they have to open a week later.
