New Northampton Turkish restaurant could be the perfect Valentine’s Day answer – Matthew Harris

by admin

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you may be looking at restaurants in Northampton and beyond perfect for you and your significant other.

Great food will no doubt be on the top of your priorities, but decor, ambience, and atmosphere are important to make the occasion one to remember.

I might have found one restaurant which ticks all of these boxes – and it’s in a great location right at the heart of one of the town’s busiest strips.

Yakut Lounge is a restaurant and cocktail bar on Wellingborough Road which serves Turkish food and tasty cocktails, all within a comfortable and modern setting.

I visited the Lounge last weekend with some friends – here’s how my experience went.

First of all, the menu itself offers plenty of different dishes. From grilled meats and Iskender to steak, pasta, seafood and vegetarian options, there really is something for everyone.

While you wait for your starters, warm pitta is served with dips to whet your appetite.

For the starter, I had Sucuk Izgara; a char-grilled spicy Turkish sausage. I must admit, I wasn’t really feeling this one too much – it was nicely seasoned but a little tough for me.

That being said, I did enjoy a bit of the Mitite Kofte – the chef’s homemade meatballs cooked in a rich tomato sauce.

My mediocre reaction to the starters was quickly blown out of the water, however, as the Yoghurtlu Chicken Shish was the star of the show for me.

This dish is well worth a try in my opinion – Diced chicken breast charcoal-grilled, topped with yoghurt, and served with tomato sauce and butter sauce.

All in all, the meal shook out at around £33 per person for a drink, starter and main. Perhaps not something you’d want to do every weekend, but it’s well worth the money in my opinion.

There was also an entire upstairs section and a cocktail menu which I didn’t get the opportunity to try, but if it maintains the quality of the items around it’d make for a wonderful Valentine’s Day night as well.

My only gripes with Yakut Lounge when I went was the service was quite slow despite not being that busy – but if you’re looking to spend a few hours exploring their menu then that might not be an issue for you.

Overall, an excellent night, and one of the biggest perks of the restaurant is that it stands right at the beginning of Wellingborough Road, where a strip full of pubs and bars continue for a mile or so on the way into the Town Centre.
