Love it or hate it,
avocado toast is impossible to ignore. Luckily, we love it and think it deserves more credit for being a hearty, delicious combo of creamy avocado and crisp-chewy toasted sourdough bread with whatever toppings your heart desires. At its simplest, it has to have lemon juice, plenty of flaky sea salt, and some sort of red pepper flake. At its most complex (and most expensive), it can have anything from diced tomatoes, cucumber, and chopped feta to smoked salmon, capers, and pickled red onions.
Half the fun of avo toast is choosing your own adventure! Once you get the basics down, try some of these fun flavor combos.
– smoked salmon, pickled red onion, everything bagel seasoning & fresh dill
– goat cheese crumbles, harissa, poached egg & basil
– pico de gallo, cilantro & lime juice
– fried egg, chili crisp, scallions & sesame seeds
To get the absolute best avocado toast, pan-frying your bread in olive oil is a must. Sure, you could pop the bread in the toaster and call it a day, but something magical happens when you crisp your bread in a generous drizzle of good extra-virgin olive oil. The cooking process infuses the bread with the slightly peppery and fruity notes from the oil while creating an evenly golden brown crust with the perfect level of crunch while maintaining the signature sourdough chew in the middle. That’s something a toaster can’t top. With a little TLC and the right ingredients, avocado toast becomes so much more than something that boomers make fun of millennials for paying $12 for.

Grate garlic into a small bowl and pour lemon juice over garlic. Add a pinch of salt and stir to dissolve.
- Step 2In a medium skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Toast bread, flipping often, until both sides have an even golden brown crust, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
- Step 3Slice avocado in half lengthwise. Remove pit, then peel each half. Place one half cut side down on a cutting board and slice lengthwise about 1/4″ thick. Fan slices on top of 1 slice of bread. Gently mash avocado into bread until entire surface is covered. Repeat with remaining avocado half and bread.
- Step 4Spoon garlic mixture over avocado. Generously season with salt and top with red pepper.
