Russian Dressing

Russian dressing is one of those classic mayo-based sauces that can kind of go with everything. While it might be known best on the classic

Reuben, this simple, savory dressing goes way beyond the sandwich. All you need are a handful of ingredients to create this crowd-pleasing dressing; make it, then keep it stored in the fridge to upgrade any (and every) meal. Here’s what you need to know:

How to make Russian dressing:
It’s said that Russian dressing got its name because the original recipe called for the ever-popular Russian ingredient, caviar. The relish that is used in most modern versions of the sauce provides a pop of briney sweetness that approximates what caviar might have originally brought to the table. Some folks add horseradish for a sinus-clearing kick to their Russian dressing, but since we know horseradish isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, we left it optional.

In addition to the relish and horseradish, all you need are mayonnaise, ketchup (or ketchup-style chili sauce), Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. This combination creates our ideal Russian dressing, but you can play around to create your ideal sauce.

Serving ideas for Russian dressing:
When you think of Russian dressing, your mind probably goes to the Reuben sandwich first. We like to think beyond the sandwich, and add this dressing to our Reuben nachos, Reuben squares, Reuben bowls, Reuben casserole, Reuben pickle bites, and Reuben-stuffed chicken. Your options don’t stop with the Reuben. Smear this on a burger, drizzle it over some fish tacos, or use it to glaze some grilled chicken. The options are truly endless with this versatile sauce.

Storage:
Once made, Russian dressing can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
