Sliders are always a guaranteed hit on game day, but these Hawaiian roll sliders are the crème de la crème. Ham, Swiss, and jammy caramelized onions are layered between the star of the show: buttery and soft Hawaiian rolls. These sliders are a go-to recipe where at Delish hen we need a quick and easy way to serve a crowd. You simply split the rolls, layer them, bake, and in a little over 10 minutes, you’ll have a dozen hot mind-blowing sandwiches ready to serve. Here’s everything you need to know:
Hawaiian rolls:
Hawaiian rolls were invented by Robert Taira, the Hawaiian-born son of Japanese immigrants who opened a bakery in Hilo in the mid-1950’s. Soft, fluffy, and just slightly sweet, the rolls quickly became so popular that Tairo expanded his business to Honolulu, and then to California. Today you can find them all over the country and in the hearts of each Delish test kitchen editor (check out these killer Hawaiian roll s’mores and you’ll understand our obsession!).
How to make Hawaiian roll sliders (& variations):
These sliders couldn’t be easier to make. After making your caramelized onions and your poppy-butter topping, you’ll get to layering. Split your slider buns in half (we like to do this all at once for ease), then layer a spread of mayo, then half the ham, Swiss, even more ham, honey mustard, then your caramelized onions. Add on your top layer of buns, then brush on your poppyseed topping until every slider is coated thoroughly.
We love the combo of ham, Swiss, and caramelized onions, but you can definitely switch it up. Sub out the ham for sliced turkey, roast beef, or other sliced lunch meat. Try another good melting cheese, such as Cheddar, provolone, or Gruyère. Just do yourself a favor and keep the caramelized onions—they might take a little extra time to make, but their jammy goodness is worth every second.
What to serve with Hawaiian roll sliders:
Serve these sliders along with your game day appetizer spread of pigs in a blanket, buffalo chicken dip and sloppy joe cups. If you want to serve this as your main, then air fryer tater tots, homemade mac and cheese, or sweet potato fries would make for delicious pairings.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes! You can fully assemble and cover with plastic wrap a few hours or even the night before your event. Simply wait to bake until you’re about to serve.
Storing Hawaiian roll sliders:
If you have leftovers you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, we recommend warming them in the oven at 350° in their own little foil packet. You can also freeze the prepared sliders for around 3 months.
