There are a lot of words we can use to describe the past year, but if our delivery and takeout orders are any indication, it was a spicy 365 days.

Grubhub just released their 2023 trend report, and it turns out that this year was one of our spiciest years ever as a country. In the past year, over 53 million items were ordered with added spice, and sriracha reigned supreme as a condiment. The beloved hot sauce, which seems to be forever stuck in shortage limbo, was added to orders over 91,000 times.

Among the dishes spice lovers ordered the most were:

  • Spicy potato soft tacos
  • Spicy chicken sandwich
  • Spicy tuna roll
  • Hot and sour soup
  • Drunken noodles

With TikTok and other social media apps having had a major impact on customers’ dining habits, some orders became popular following viral fame. The #DietCokeBreak trend on TikTok for instance helped in-office orders of Diet Coke increase by 17 percent in 2023.

Additionally, coffee became cooler this year (literally). In a break from standard hot coffee, the most ordered coffee beverages included iced or chilled drinks. Among the favorites were iced coffee, caramel frappe, and mocha frappe.

Another shocker this year was that customers (finally!) embraced pineapples on their pizza. Pineapple as a topping on pizza rose 33 percent over last year. Another quirky combo that served as a favorite in 2023 was salad paired with French fries. The combination was ordered over 600,000 times. Makes sense to us!
